Offbeat Weekend, Roger Daltrey Given the Boot by The Who

The end of the 1965 European tour for The Who was dramatic.

Roger Daltrey punched Keith Moon resulting in Daltrey being sacked from The Who. An argument broke about between all four band members on a double show backed night in Denmark.

The band had terrible circumstances happen at the back end of the 1965 tour. At one show, fans pulled Daltrey into the crowd which injured his back. Another concert began with the audience storming the stage that resulted in massive damage. The van containing the band’s gear was stolen.

Daltrey had enough of Moon’s drug-induced haze and lackluster performances during the tour and he flushed his drug stash down the toilet. Moon flipped a switch and Daltrey ended up punching him in the nose, almost breaking it.

In the book Roger Daltrey: The Biography, Daltrey says, “It wasn’t just because I hated him, it was just because I loved the band so much and thought it was being destroyed by those pills.”

The decision to fire him lasted about a week. Managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp felt the band needed to stick together to achieve success. After apologizing and agreeing to abstain from violent outbursts, Daltrey was back in the band. Two weeks later, The Who recorded their chart-breaking hit ‘My Generation’.
