thebuzzr indie – The Jailbirds: Raw Rock Talent

The Jailbird’s drop of ‘Watery Grave’ establishes the band as a Canadian rock indie band to follow. The band offers music redolent of melodic death metal of the 70s and 80s with new raw rock talent. From 2016, members guitarist/vocals Myke Penney, bassist Liam Hills and drummer Eric Parent have developed a unique sound.

The band performs solid riffs, heavy rhythm, and incredible vocals. Their music has the heaviness, grungy character of Black Sabbath. If ‘Watery Grave’ is a radar, the band will not disenchant. This release follows a successful 2019 debut EP The Black River.

The Jailbirds toured Ontario venues in 2019, providing fans with a live show at their music performing the tracks from The Black River. They are on the roster for Kingston area 2020 Voodoo Rockfest, confirmed September 11/12th weekend. Follow the event.

Their music is their own, tempered with the grunge, classic rock feels of Black Sabbath, Soundgarden, and Royal Blood. ‘The Black River’ is a dynamic EP with fantastic guitar work, restrained tones, heavy and catchy vocals, and a serious rhythm section, all owning their unique sound as musicians.

“Black Madonna” carries heavy guitar from the open with the heaviness of Black Sabbath and Royal Blood.

There is a brawny, yanking Black Sabbath’s element to ‘Away From Home’. This song is a heavy offering to fans and a blast to a strong album. ‘My Secret is Out’ is a playful take on grunge, that is a hookier, catchy, simple fun track. You will like this track.

This killer debut album certainly endorsed the trio to be one of Toronto’s emerging talents, professionally incorporating 70s, 90s rock influences into their own music.

The trio has 11 video clips to showcase their music on YouTube. I inspire you to check out Myke Penney’s Sick Riffs #59: Myke Penney teaches you The Jailbirds’ The Black River on YouTube. The stomping riffs are out of this sphere. “One such example is the title track from the band’s 2019 EP The Black River, which boasts a crunchy low-string riff.” (Guitar World)

Hamilton/Burlington based radio network, Y108 Rocks have spotlighted the band. In 2018 The Jailbirds were the Winners of Best Rock Band at the Mississauga Music Awards.

Two words. Respect. Watch. Anything this band has put out is outstanding. Their execution is top-notch professional. What strikes you most is the cohesive synergy between the three band members. The energy one feels watching The Jailbirds perform will be a deciding element in their success.

The Jailbird’s made a spot on the buzzr playlist. I suspect their upcoming EP ‘DULL MY BRAIN’ being part of that list. They are a band to respect, enjoy and watch.
