July 28, 1960 – ‘Only the Lonely’ UK Chart-Topper for Roy Orbison

When the song ‘Only the Lonely’ was turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison recorded the song himself. A wise decision as the song entered the UK chart, which went on to give Roy his first of three UK chart-toppers.

‘Only The Lonely’ was an operatic rock ballad and was groundbreaking in the evolution of Rock and Roll. The original release was as a 45rpm single by Monument Records in May 1960. ‘Only The Lonely’ went to No. 2 in the United States.
