“Rotten” contains the thoughts of someone plagued by anxiety and regret looking for a change in perspective. Escapism, whether it’s the imaginary world of daydreaming or the chemical kind, is losing its appeal, and no longer brings about the elation or release from reality it once did. It shows the feeling of getting used to a particular state of being to the point of uninspiring familiarity. The protagonist finds themselves suddenly longing for more, finally ready to face the world as it is and find their place in it, even if they “don’t wanna hear it” at first.
