February 27, 1971 

Janis Joplin’s album Pearl hits #1 in the US, where it stays for nine weeks. Joplin died of a heroin overdose three months before the album was released.

February 28, 2012 

Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump makes a blog post titled “We Liked You Better Fat: Confessions of a Pariah” where he writes about hitting a low point with a failed solo album and taunts from audience members. The post prompts FOB bass player Pete Wentz to contact Stump, and they get the band back together, staging a triumphant comeback with their 2013 album Save Rock and Roll and the hit “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up).”

February 29, 1992 

U2 premiered their Zoo TV tour in Lakeland, Florida, making their first US concert appearance in four years and transforming the band into “an audio-visual idea.”

March 1, 1969 

Jim Morrison of The Doors is arrested on stage at a Miami show after allegedly exposing himself to the audience.

March 2, 1984 

This Is Spinal Tap is released in theaters, chronicling the hapless heavy metal band with exploding drummers and an amp that goes to 11. It leaves some in laughter and some in tears. Ozzy Osbourne is just confused.

March 3, 1989 

A day after the song debuts in a 2-minute Pepsi commercial, the video for Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” hits MTV and causes an uproar.
